Pearl Django and Karen Marguth
The Fresno Folklore Society presents an evening of Hot Club Swing with Pearl Django and Karen Marguth.
With eleven albums and a performance history spanning almost two decades, Pearl Django endures as one of the most highly regarded Hot Club style groups working today. Although the band’s roots are firmly in the music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli, its extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions. Pearl Django has performed at festivals, dances and nightspots throughout the U.S. and abroad. The band’s signature style is marked by pristine and dexterous string work, colors of Bal Musette, the steady pulse of rhythm guitar and an unmistakable swing that delights audiences of all musical sensibilities.
"Pearl Django play(s) gypsy jazz…and they do it with such verve, skill and pleasure that they're pretty much irresistible to jazz and non-jazz listeners alike."
—Seattle Weekly
Fresno's own Karen Marguth, a jazz singer with several albums available, will open the show.

Lance Canales & The Flood are a roots-blues influenced Americana trio from California’s breadbasket, where Canales lived the life that so many songs have been written about since the birth of roots music – hard labor, one room shacks and taunting ghosts whispering of a better life. Canales’ guttural vocals combine a hard-edged storytelling approach beneath a stripped down, foot-stomping, acoustic instrumentation. The Flood are made up of stand up bassist, David Quinday (whose mournful bowing can be found on tracks such as “Hummingbird Blues” on the bands most recent album “Elixir”) and multi-percussionist Zak Parrish. Using an old railroad tamp or playing a stomp box with his bare feet Parrish keeps the rhythm along with the crowd, as Canales, described on the blog “Bound for Glory” by music Journalist, Robin Wheeler, “… plays hollow-bodied, anger-fueled blues guitar. He growls and stomps with his feet clad in the heavy work boots of his grandfather…”
Stable Hands is a band as distinct as it is absolutely compelling. This Six-piece roots band with artistic, geographic, and spiritual roots in the rich and expansive Central Valley of California, offers what only the most polished song and wordsmiths ever really understand and only few among them ever actually master. Stable Hands consistently
delivers, gift wrapped in finely crafted songs and authentic intimations, a familiar part of ourselves – a part of ourselves we welcome like an old friend.
